Abstract
This study investigates the impact of extreme heat waves on tourism Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Denpasar, Bali, and explores the role of Stoicism both as a psychological resilience framework and a driver of sustainability practices. Climate change-induced heat waves increasingly disrupt tourism activities, affecting MSME operations and altering consumer behavior. A Stoic Responsible Tourism Model is developed to support MSMEs in adapting to environmental stress while promoting responsible consumption. This study adopts a quantitative approach using a structured questionnaire distributed to 200 tourism-based MSMEs engaged in eco-friendly practices. The questionnaire measured variables including Stoicism (wisdom, self-control), perceived heat wave intensity, consumer behavior, and sustainability practices. Data were analyzed in relation of the mediation effects using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Results show Stoicism allows for the endurance of heat challenges for MSME owners, whereas consumer behavior acted as the major mediator between stress from the environment and sustainability outcomes. This emphasizes the importance that strategic management needs to give when applying Stoic teachings to cultivate adaptive resilience and competitive advantage among tourism MSMEs.
