course provides guidance in planning, implementing and succeed in scientific research. Students are introduced to the philosophy of science and ethics necessary to be adopted by researchers. Students are given exposure to determine and manage risks in scientific research. Apart from that, issues and rules related to research such as intellectual property, copyright, plagiarism etc. will be discussed.\u00a0 Subsequently, students are guided to plan their research and prepare a research proposal. For this, students are trained with techniques in information search both manually and on-line, identifying issues and research objectives, planning research and experimental design within their period of study. Students are required to prepare their research proposal according to the format and free from plagiarism. Students are given the opportunity to present and defend their proposal in a seminar. Students will be evaluated based on written and oral presentation of the research proposal, and final examination<\/span><\/p><p><strong>STAB6054 Conservation Ethics and Legislation<\/strong><br \/>Ethics and law are essential to conservation. The former sets the objective, and the latter the\u00a0legal basis. This course will briefly introduce by way of background, the basic issues relating\u00a0to conservation ethics and law. General ethical concerns, the evolution of laws relating to\u00a0biological resources, habitat and ecosystems, at both global and national levels will be\u00a0sketched. Various principles and concepts relating to biological conservation will also be\u00a0discussed, to identify the inherent values (ethics). Institutional roles and functions will be\u00a0outlined to describe the accountability and responsibility attached in implementing laws for\u00a0conservation. Issues in sustainable economy of renewable and non-renewable resources,\u00a0economic valuation of natural resource goods and environmental functions and their\u00a0incorporation into a cost benefit analysis of development projects versus conservation will be\u00a0given special attention. A discussion on the use of economic and market-based instruments\u00a0to encourage natural and environmental resource conservation will be provided.<\/p><p><strong>STAE6013 Management of Lake Ecosystems and Wetlands<\/strong><br \/>This course will commence with the introduction of lakes and wetland ecosytem. Its uses and\u00a0ecosystem function based on case studies of Tasik Chini and Putrajaya lake, which have\u00a0been intensively studied and researched. The management of both lakes as natural and\u00a0manmade in terms of lake ecosystems and as a wetland will be widely discussed. The\u00a0significance of research such as limnology, bathymetry and ecohydrology that could give a\u00a0better understanding in both lakes and wetland. It is important to stress the issues of\u00a0governance as most Acts on lakes and wetland are under the jurisdiction of state acts. Case\u00a0studies in Malaysia and other countries are taken into account. The watershed poses an\u00a0important scenario to climate change; therefore the microclimate influence plays an important\u00a0role. Watersheds are confine to areas surrounding ridges, which needs to be mapped using\u00a0GIS and remote sensing to look at large areas as a whole. Both flora and fauna are related to\u00a0forest and its climate.<\/p><p><strong>STAE6303 Procedures and Techniques in EIA<\/strong><br \/>The focus of this course is on the procedure and technique of EIA based on the existing\u00a0environmental law. These include screening, elaboration on prescribed activity, scoping,\u00a0preliminary and detailed EIA, evaluation of impact, mitigation and data reporting. Procedures\u00a0on environmental auditing and monitoring will also be discussed. Social impact analysis shall\u00a0also be looked at in order to achieve a comprehensive study on the environment in relation to\u00a0sustainable development.<\/p><p><strong>STAE6323 Assessment and Monitoring of Air and Water Quality<\/strong><br \/>This course will commence with discussions on types of noise, air and water pollution, their\u00a0principle sources, indexes used to assess their qualities as well as the pertinent law and\u00a0regulations. Various monitoring techniques including use of bioassays, biomarkers and\u00a0biosensors will be discussed.
