The development in technology for in situ tests have been very rapid for the last one decadesÌýespecially in the field of civil engineering and environmental industries. Many testing methodsÌýand material characterization have been introduced which include the geophysicalÌýengineering and environmental techniques. The effectiveness, accuracy and fast as well asÌýrelatively low operational cost have made geophysical techniques become important tools inÌýengineering site investigations and in environmental monitoring works. There are variousÌýgeophysical techniques that can be used to obtain many engineering parameters of materialÌýbelow surface and this field requires skilled and experienced geophysicists to interpretÌýgeophysical data collected from the field.
This programme is designed to provide students with specialist training into all aspects ofÌýApplied Geophysics, from the basic physical principles through practical applications to stateÌýof the art technical geophysical innovations. The main thrust of the course is towardsÌýEngineering and Environmental Geophysics industries. The broad-based approach allowsÌýgraduates to pursue their career options including consulting, research and teaching as wellÌýas to prepare themselves for further studies at higher levels. It is also targeted at workingÌýprofessionals wishing to update their knowledge or acquire new skills in the field of engineeringÌýand environmental geophysics

STPD6024 Research Methodology
This course provides guidance in planning, implementing and succeed in scientific research. Students are introduced to the philosophy of science and ethics necessary to be adopted by researchers. Students are given exposure to determine and manage risks in scientific research. Apart from that, issues and rules related to research such as intellectual property, copyright, plagiarism etc. will be discussed.Ìý Subsequently, students are guided to plan their research and prepare a research proposal. For this, students are trained with techniques in information search both manually and on-line, identifying issues and research objectives, planning research and experimental design within their period of study. Students are required to prepare their research proposal according to the format and free from plagiarism. Students are given the opportunity to present and defend their proposal in a seminar. Students will be evaluated based on written and oral presentation of the research proposal, and final examination
STAG6314 Engineering Geophysics
This course discusses basic principles of geophysical methods that are used in siteÌýinvestigation to obtain subsurface engineering information. Emphasis will be given to latestÌýgeophysical techniques (surface and subsurface) used in the industry. The relationshipÌýbetween geophysical parameters and engineering geological properties of rock and soil willÌýbe discussed together with some case studies.
STAG6324 Environmental Geophysics
This is an introduction course to theory and application of geophysical methods (GeoelectricalÌýresistivity, seismic, magnetic, gravity, induced polarization, self potential, electromagnetic andÌýground penetration radar) for environmental evaluation of development sites. SpecialÌýemphasis on waste disposal and contaminated sites, detection and mapping of sinkholes andÌýshallow buried objects as well as case studies will be given.
STAG6334 Instrumental and Field Geophysics
This course will discuss the working principle of various geophysical instruments and developÌýskills of students to operate the equipment for quality geophysical field data collection and aÌýfull understanding of the limitations of each instrument in use. At the end of the course,Ìýstudents are able to handle and import data recorded in the equipment used.
STAG6343 Geophysical Data Processing
This course covers the basic principles of methods used in analyzing digital signal forÌýgeophysical applications. Data processing and practice is provided in labs using software suchÌýas RES2DINV, SeisOpt, Oasis Montaj, Sketctup and Google Earth. The basic toÌýunderstanding of classification and signal system representation and the menus contained inÌýthe software are emphasized and examples of usage will also be discussed.
STAP6353 Geophysical Data Interpretation
This course covers the basic principles of engineering and environmental geophysical dataÌýinterpretation. Emphasis will be given to digital surface and subsurface geophysical data usedÌýin the industry and the application of computer software for data interpretation, resultsÌýpresentation (reports, graphic and maps) and communication as well as to build up the studentÌýability to relate results and local geology.
STAG6363 Hydrogeology and Contamination Process
This course focuses on the basic theory of ground water flow and geological control whichÌýalso covers evaluation, application and characterization of water resources. UnderstandingÌýthe inorganic chemistry and organic compounds in ground water, multiphase movement,Ìýtransformation, retardation and attenuation of contaminants and other related geologicalÌýprocesses will also be discussed.
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field with minimum CGPA 2.50 or equivalent, from any institutions of higher learningÌý recognized by the ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ Senate;Ìýor
- Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field with minimum CGPA 2.00 – 2.49 or equivalent, with minimum of 5 years working experience or research project in relevant field. Proof of the working experience of a foreign candidate should be acknowledge by the embassy of the respective country;Ìýor
- Fulfill Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL A) for local candidates only:
- should be more than 30 years of age in the year of application; and
- possess at least STPM or diploma in relevant field or other equivalent qualification recognized by the Government of Malaysia and approved by the ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ Senate; and
- possessÌýa certificate of MQA APEL with MQF Level 7
- An international student shall obtain minimum results of TOEFL iBT score 46 / IELTS band 5.5 / CEFR band B2 / MUET band 3 (An international student who comes from a country where English is the official language, or who has obtained academic qualifications from any institution of higher learning that uses English as the medium of instruction may be exempted from the requirement for TOEFL / IELTS / MUET);Ìýand
